Works with Nest: Nest launches developer program, talks to your car, washing machine

Right on the heels of yesterday’s post about saving money and energy with home automation programs comes Nest’s announcement that it has launched a developer program that lets third-party apps and devices talk to Nest hardware, giving it functionality that is not possible via Nest’s official software.

Works with Nest

‘Works with Nest’ makes it possible for your Nest devices to securely interact with the things you already use everyday, both inside and outside of your home

The program kicks off with many partnerships already in place and promises to add more as the developer program gets its full head of steam. Here are a few examples:

  • Chamberlain’s garage door opener can now tell your Nest Learning Thermostat when you’re home;
  • Mercedes-Benz lets you check the temperature on the road;
  • Logitech’s Harmony Ultimate remote can lower the heat in mid-movie;
  • Jawbone’s Up24 fitness tracker can tell Nest when you wake up;
  • The Nest Learning Thermostat will communicate with Whirlpool washers and dryers to avoid peak energy consumption period, which will save you money.

Coming Soon

Since Nest was recently purchased by Google, come this fall, Google voice commands will let you set the temperature on your thermostat and Google Now will optionally heat or cool your home as soon as leave for work.
This is just the beginning. While the first wave of developers have given Nest users plenty to work with already, Nest’s developer program promises many more useful — and money saving — features in the very near future.
